There has been a ‘dramatic rise’ in cough medicine sales, with an independent Irish pharmacy chain CARE PLUS seeing a spike of over 40pc. Expectorant Essential Oils AromatherapyEssential oils are fabulous to use to help the system cope and combat any infections like throat and chest infections. Eucalyptus - Ten over-the-counter decongestant products, such as chest rubs, essential oils for steam inhalation, contain eucalyptus oil. This oil can relieve the symptoms of colds and coughs, including sinus congestion and stuffiness. The oil is made from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. Lemon - Just like salt water and honey, lemons are great for sore throats because they can help break up mucus and provide pain relief. They are an excellent booster for vitamin C and bio-flavanoids. The fresh lemon juice also alkalyses the blood which can also reduce the infection time. Tea Tree Tea Oil - has antiviral properties that have proven to be effective against common pathogens. A 2001 study found that a combination of tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil worked effectively against the herpes simplex virus. A 2013 study found that tea tree oil could prevent the spread of influenza. Honey Lemon Ginger TeaWhen I used to live in Northern India in the Buddhist monastery in winter time one of the most requested drink by many of the people of Norther India was honey lemon ginger tea. Honey has according to Scientists at the University of Oxford found honey was 'superior' in soothing symptoms for those with a cold, flu or other upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). They reviewed 14 different studies, each comparing honey to another method of care for URTIs, such as cough suppressants, steroids and antibiotics. Honey came out very effective. Ginger A 2011 laboratory study found that ginger showed a higher antibacterial effect than antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. S. pyogenes is the bacterium that causes streptococcal pharyngitis, known as strep throat. Mindful Beauty Arthro Box
